This, the beautiful dichotomy, is what every day looks like now, as a mama.
But it’s absolutely the main thing in my life that makes the most sense. These moments coexisting together. The harmony of it all.
Having a child in my 30s wasn’t ‘the plan.’ I was a young girl in Louisiana, who dreamt of being married in my early 20s, having a child soon after, and settling into my ‘important career in entertainment’ on top of that.
You take these moments and build upon them and build upon them just to have life happen. The joy, the pain, the in-between of it all.
Yes, we must take our steps forward to where we’d like to go and create who we desire to be, but ultimately, life happens. Timing is everything, and we can only control how we react to what’s happening now.
I’ve spent more hours on a tv set than at home, during most of my adult life. I’ve helped filmmakers and TV execs create Emmy winning TV shows. I’ve set up programs, written plenty of scripts, and published a book.
The incredible, indescribable memories birthed on the Warner Bros lot don’t compare to me actually birthing my child. The most fulfilling role I now have, being a mama. It’s also the hardest one so far.
But we need both though, right, and the in-between? To live in a happy moment and also experience the weight of grief. We can’t outrun what makes life… well, life.
So, how can we set ourselves up for harmony? We must accept that, if we are here, if we are still here breathing the fresh air we’ve been blessed with, we must accept the ebbs and flows.
We must be okay living within the miraculous moments (seeing a child walk for the very first time)… and the scary ones (living in a city filled with burning homes).
And to do the best we can, with what we currently have.
It might be the easiest time, then the hardest time, then the funnest time. It’s the beautifulness — the wholeness of accepting and also, letting go.
You can be more than one thing. Your situation can be more than one thing. Life is more than one thing, and the harmony is in the accepting.
Believing in your victory!
