If you’re a filmmaker, screenwriter, or creative of any kind, chances are you have no shortage of ideas. The problem isn’t inspiration — it’s focus.
You’ve got three half-written scripts, two short film concepts jotted down somewhere, or a tv series idea that keeps whispering to you at 2 a.m. And yet… nothing is moving forward.
Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. In fact, this is one of the most common challenges I hear from indie creatives:
“I have so many ideas, I don’t know which one to start. So I either just stop… or jump between them and finish none of them.”
Let’s talk about how to shift that.
Because the truth is, not every idea deserves your energy right now.
As creatives, we fall in love with possibility. That rush of a new idea can feel like creative electricity — addictive, thrilling, full of promise.
But constantly chasing new ideas without finishing anything creates a dangerous cycle:
And worse? You burn out without the joy of seeing your work out in the world.
So how do you break the cycle?
It starts with purpose.
When you choose your projects based on alignment instead of excitement alone, everything shifts. You stop jumping between shiny objects and start making meaningful progress.
I’m talking about being intentional with your time, energy, and creative focus.
Ask yourself:
When your project connects to something deeper — your values, your voice, your vision — it becomes easier to stick with it, finish it, and share it.
Before you dive into another draft or deck, run your idea through this filter. It’ll help you move from default mode to decisive mode.
1. Does this idea align with the season I’m in?
Not every season of life is a “make a short film” season. Maybe this is your writing season. Or your learning season. Or your digital-form content season. Start there.
2. Is there a clear outcome or purpose for this project?
Festival submission? Writing sample? Proof of concept? Artistic expression? Even if the outcome is personal catharsis, define it. Purpose gives you a finish line.
3. Can I realistically commit to this with the time and energy I have?
If it’s not feasible, it’s not failur. We’re not calling it that. It’s just a… ‘not now.’ Be honest with your bandwidth. The goal is consistency.
If your idea doesn’t pass at least 2 of these 3 filters, it might belong in your “idea bank,” not your active project list.
Let this creative clarity guide be your creative permission slip and know:
When you prioritize projects with purpose, your creativity doesn’t get diluted.
It gets amplified.
You finish more, build momentum and reconnect with your voice. And that? That’s the sweet spot.
