Welcome to the beginning of a new worksheet series, to deepen your creative mind and get to the nitty gritty of your creativity! It’s designed to support you — whether you’re a creative, writer, entrepreneur, filmmaker, or anyone who’s eager to be more creative — as you begin working on your next/dream project with clarity and purpose.
Before you begin a new project, you have to zero in on your why. The way I begin a new project, or create in general, depends on the project. But almost always, I grab my iced coffee (of course!), my notebook and laptop, some good music, and define my why.
By getting to the heart of your motivations, you’ll have a clear and actionable roadmap for how your project can impact both you and your audience — and the roadmap will help provide direction and keep you inspired when challenges arise.
Let’s set up the framework for the rest of this blog post and the paired worksheet. We’re going to:
Let’s get to it!
Prompt: Uncover the Core Purpose Behind Your Project
Consider the values, passions, and goals that drive you. Who will benefit from your work, and how will it improve their experience or outcome? What need are you fulfilling?
This foundational understanding will guide you through decision-making, ensure your project stays aligned with your vision, and help you communicate its importance to others.
Activity: Write a short mission statement for your project.
Spend 10 minutes writing down the reason behind this creative endeavor. Why does it matter to you? What problem does it solve or feeling does it evoke? Keep it concise — this statement will guide your decisions.
Here’s an example: “I want to create a film about the power of community to inspire change.”
Prompt: Reflect on Your Personal Connection
Does it relate to something in your life? What motivates you to continue, even when there are many obstacles and challenges?
Activity: Spend 10-15 minutes journaling, or jotting down in your notebook, about a personal connection you feel to this project. Ask yourself:

Hi Jess! I came back after going over the worksheet (great download by the way), and I’ve already fleshed out my “mission statement.” My why is much clearer now, which I know will help my brand overall. Great jumping off point. Keep these coming!
